Canada Responds To Trumps Tariffs, Affecting Michigan Residents Power
One of the biggest talking points since the inauguration of President Donald Trump was the tariffs that we were planning to place on foreign countries and the goods that they import and export in and out of America. As expected, this received tons of backlash from those other countries but also from people in the United States as well.

The two main complaints came from our nearest neighbors, Canda and Mexico who felt that the tariffs were unjust, unfair, and inadequate. I believe they feel this was too large of a tax to impose right away and would have liked if it was a smaller percentage that worked its way up rather than starting so high. As you can see, they didn't get their wishes and have decided to respond.
There was initially some talk of Canada cutting power to Michigan, which some people were confused by. There are some Canadian generators that provide power to parts of Michigan, and they were going to cease that electricity immediately. Although they decided to leave them running, they did have a response to Trump's tariffs.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced that they would be imposing a 25% surcharge to all generators providing electricity to the United States and will not hesitate to raise to surcharge or shut power down completely if President Trump was to raise the tariffs again.
What Does This Mean For Michigan?
Michigan should only be affected on a small scale when it comes to electricity has most power is provided by in state electricity providers but there is another concern. Michigan and Canada are using an interconnected power grid which means that the power flows back and forth between the two countries, but if Canada cuts power this could affect Michigan's power grid.
There are concerns of Michigan's power grid not being as strong as it is now if we aren't able to use the interconnected grid that we share with Canada. The removal of this systems makes both Americans and Canadians more susceptible to grid-scale outages. As of right now, we are only being charged more for the power we're receiving from Canada, but this can turn sour quickly.
There has been some talk of President Trump raising the tariffs to 50% in response to the 25% surcharge on electricity. This 50% tariff is on steel and aluminum and is only for Canada. The war is just beginning, and we are all in for a long ride.
