Owning a boat is something that a lot of people have equated with success and I could see how they are expensive and cost a pretty penny to maintain as well. Nonetheless, many people here in Michigan own a boat and it makes sense where there is a lake everywhere you go. Spending summer days out on the lake is prime Mitten state culture.

The Great Lakes see more boat usage than any of the other lakes within Michigan as they have freight and other cargo being moved to large cities like Chicago, Milwaukee, Windsor, and others. In the summertime, you can see tons of families enjoying the sunshine out on the great lakes in various boats, but once the boating season ends the numbers dwindle drastically.

Many people avoid going out during the fall and winter as the currents, wind, and other conditions can be dangerous to travel in. That's one of the reasons that the U.S Coast Guard (USCG) exists along with keeping the water in our home country safe. The Coast Guard was called into action for boaters who were stranded on Lake Michigan.

The Coast Guard received a call about a 25-foot boat that had lost its steering and was 2 nautical miles North of Manistee Harbor. The Coast Guard sent the Helicopter crew to perform the rescue but they also sent the USCG Cutter Spar crew because of the inclement weather.

The USCG says that all boaters should remember to check their vessels, equipment, and conditions before heading out on the water. The Helicopter crew was able to rescue all 3 of the boaters to the Manistee Airport where they were then taken by EMS to the local hospital for evaluation.
