The summertime is one of the best times of the year as the weather is nice, most people have less responsibilities, the family spends time together, and there's plenty of opportunities to spend time outdoors. Whether you're going to the park, doing yard work, going to an amusement/water park, or just enjoying time on your porch, there's no better place to be than outside during the summer.

With that being said there are some dangers to being outdoors during the summer months. Firstly, the sun is shining bright and it's hot out, so dehydration and sun burn are serious concerns which can cause serious damage or other injuries. Another thing that will be a huge issue in the summertime will be allergies as pollen circulates in the atmosphere. All of those concerns are easily avoidable but what about those that aren't such as bugs? Well, if you live in Ohio, there are a few things you can do to keep bugs away during the warm weather.

It's no surprise that the bugs will be back to terrorize us over the summer while the weather is at its best, it's the same routine each year. Some bugs are milder than others but one of the most annoying to deal with is mosquitos. The small bug whizzes around the earth, biting and piercing the skin to feast on human blood, well, there are some ways you can keep mosquitos away.

Firstly, using bug spray or other bug repellants or deterrents can keep them away for a while but won't work forever. Also, there are some methods to consider when choosing your clothing for the summer activities. You can pair the bug repellants with these clothing options to maximizer results. A study done by The University of Washington says you should avoid wearing the following colors to keep mosquitos away:

  •  Red
  • Orange
  • Cyan
  • Black

Mosquitos are attracted to things like your breath, smell/sweat, and even your body temperature but there's one other thing that they're attracted to. Believe it or not, Mosquitos are attracted to clothing and other items that are the colors listed above, so wearing these colors can draw more bug attention to yourself than other colors. In fact, that same study says the following colors are colors that mosquitos avoid for the most part:

  • Green
  • Purple
  • Blue
  • White

Now, I'm not saying that wearing the colors above or not wearing the four previous colors will keep you 100% safe from mosquitos this summer, but I do know that it will reduce the chances. Wearing bug repellants can help with this process as well but realistically the only way to keep yourself completely safe from bugs is to stay indoors.
