FBI Warns Michigan Parents of Racial Slavery Texts
Unsurprisingly, this year's election caused a lot of tension and division among people around the country. This happens every presidential election cycle; somehow, we all manage to coexist still. Even here in Michigan, there was a mixed voting pool within the state as everyone is entitled to their opinion.
What I will say, is that your actions based upon your opinion should never place anyone in harm's way and if they do, then you're wrong, simple as that. With that being said, there have been some individuals in the country who have used their thoughts and opinions to invoke fear into others in the U.S.
There have been several reports that black people in several different states have received disturbing texts after the election results were announced. There have been people as young as middle schoolers to adults in their 40s and 50s who have had the unfortunate luck of having to read awful, threatening, and racist texts.
Some instructed the recipient to show up at an address at a particular time “with your belongings,” while others didn’t include a location. Some of them mentioned the incoming presidential administration. Many of the texts referenced individuals by name and asked them to report for slavery.
I don't think I have to explain why this is wrong but just the mention of such a tragic event in the year 2024, is extremely unsettling and shouldn't be meant with passive energy. The FBI has announced that they have started an investigation into the texts but have no information on their origins at the moment.
All parents should keep an eye on their children's phone and social media usage to ensure their safety while also allowing them some privacy. This is a very scary event for many of us around the country, but being aware and diligent can keep us safe.
