
West Michigan Sees Increase In Hand Foot And Mouth Disease
As kids in West Michigan are heading back to school this fall there has been an increase in cases of students with Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD).

Dr. Ben Tift, a pediatrician at Corewell Health told Fox 17 that HFMD is starting to go around West Michigan.
“Hand, Foot and Mouth is definitely spreading, like we’ve been seeing cases in the office out here in Grand Haven every day for the last couple weeks."
What Is Hand, Foot, And Mouth Disease
HFMD is a common and contagious viral illness that causes a rash with spots or blisters on the hands, feet, and inside the mouth.
It's most common in young children but can affect older kids and adults as well.
Where Does Hand, Foot, And Mouth Disease Rash Appear
If you have HFMD the rash usually shows up on the palms of your hands, the soles of your feet, and as painful sores inside the mouth.
It can also appear on the buttocks and groin.

How Is Hand, Foot, And Mouth Disease Spread
HFMD Is very contagious and can spread easily through contact with an infected person's saliva, mucus, fluid from the blisters, or even their feces.

When it comes to HFMD, there isn't a specific treatment, instead doctors focus on trying to relieve the symptoms with over-the-counter pain relievers.

How Long Does A Hand, Foot, And Mouth Disease Infection Last
Someone who has HFMD with mild symptoms will typically see things clear up on their own in 7 to 10 days.
