There are very few things Michigan drivers agree on, but one of them is our universal loathing of roundabouts. Not a polite dislike. A deep, emotional, why-is-this-thing-in-my-life hatred. And now, thanks to Michigan Auto Law, we know which of these traffic circles are the 10 most dangerous in the state (see gallery below).

Roundabouts are often touted as safer than traditional intersections, and begrudgingly, data from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) backs that up, in part. Fatal and injury crashes may go down, but total crashes often go up. This means fewer catastrophic wrecks, but a whole lot more screeching brakes, last-second lane changes, and drivers realizing they picked the wrong entrance lane three seconds too late.

Tips to Navigate Roundabouts Safely

Adding to the confusion, injury data is often based on ambulance responses at the scene. As Michigan Auto Law's Steve Gursten notes, many crash injuries show up hours or days later, long after everyone has driven home, convinced they are "fine."

The frustration is real, and so is the data. Five of the top twenty most dangerous intersections in Michigan are roundabouts. Following the basic rules of a roundabout, like choosing your lane before entering, using your turn signal (yes, that's a law), and remembering that traffic moves counterclockwise, will keep you from becoming a statistic.

Michigan Auto Law analyzed official crash data from the Michigan State Police Traffic Crash Reporting Unit and ranked roundabouts by total reported crashes.
