Combat sports have been around since the beginning of time, and they have now only been regulated so that things are a little fairer and entertaining. Back in the day, things were much different as there were no defined rules and no weight classes, which meant many beat downs. Today's boxing and MMA world is much more sophisticated than the old school gladiator times.

One of the other important parts of the regulation in today's combat sports is the implementation of drug testing to ensure that no one was bringing an unfair advantage into the ring or octagon. This has led to many controversies over the time and many debates about different fighters due to their drug test results.

Combat sports have a very strict list of acceptable and banned substances with very little to no leeway or grace for positive tests. That's why the diet and lifestyle choices of combat athletes are so important, as one wrong meal, supplement, or choice could have grave consequences. That's what one Michigan born champion is finding out after her most recent drug test.

Claressa Shields is an undisputed champion in 3 different WBC weight classes while also being a two-time Olympic gold medalist. Now, she is facing scrutiny after she tested positive for marijuana following her victory in a fight against heavyweight Danielle Perkins. This forced the Michigan Unarmed Combat Commission to open an investigation and ultimately suspend Shields.

Shields will not be able to compete in Michigan until her suspension is completed, she says that she will have to go to trial for the petite amount found in her system. Many questioned if she found using PEDs which sparked her response on social media stating that she never used them and that it was just cannabis.

Recreational marijuana use has been legal in the state of Michigan since 2018 but is still banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) which explains the positive test results.
