Alert: Michigan Drivers Slow Down In Construction Zones
One of the things that we are used to seeing as drivers in Michigan is those dreaded orange cones that signify road construction. Road work might be the bane of our existence as drivers as this always creates more traffic and sometimes causes us to take different routes on detours due to closed roads. As much as we dislike it, dealing with road construction is inevitable, especially here in Michigan.
Many of us here in Michigan joke that road work is the 5th season of the year because it's such a common occurrence. Even though we may be in a hurry, taking the time to slow down through a construction zone is important for not only the health and safety of the workers but for you and every other driver on the road.
Firstly, there are all kinds of heavy machinery, vehicles, tools, and materials that are present in a work zone that could cause damage to any person or vehicle. On top of that, there is a chance that you have to swerve and hit another vehicle in the process, lose control of your vehicle, or hit a worker, which all could come with penalties.
To make construction zones safer, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a bill into law that will allow cameras in work zones. These cameras are designed to reduce the speed of drivers and protect construction workers. House bills 4132 and 4133 make Michigan the 23rd state in America to use cameras in construction zones.
In the last year, there were over 8,000 accidents that occurred in relation to work zones and 24 people lost their lives as the new bill will look to reduce crashes as well. The cameras will be equipped with sensors that will monitor the speed of passing vehicles and take pictures of violating vehicles.
They will have pictures of the car and license plate that will be marked with the date, time, and location. Violators could face consequences for going 10 or more mph over the posted speed limit in a construction zone.
