Alert Michigan: Don’t Touch Dryer Sheet Found In Your Mailbox
One of things that people are just conditioned to do is retrieving the mail from their mailbox every day. For some people, this is a fun activity as they are often expecting fan mail, letters from family, friends, or other loved ones, or there are packages waiting to be opened. For other people, going to the mailbox every day is a daunting task as they are bound to be staring at bills.
Although mail is something that most of us would like to ignore because we don't want to look at the bills we have already paid online or are behind on. We also don't want the billions of preapproved credit cards that have outrageously high APR percentages. Checking your mailbox may seem like a relatively harmless daily chore that must be done, btu depending on what you find in your mailbox, that feeling could completely change.
What would you do if you came out to your mailbox and saw a lone dryer sheet sitting under your mail? Your first thought would most likely be to grab the sheet and throw it away, except that's the very thing you shouldn't do. Most likely this dryer sheet was placed inside of your mailbox by your mail carrier and should stay there for both your safety and theirs.

No, this isn't some wild trend but instead is something that we would all sympathize with as the dryer sheet's function is to fend off unwanted bugs. More specifically, the dryer sheet is there to ward off wasps and yellowjackets which can be deadly in some cases. Both wasps and yellowjackets like to hang out in mailboxes and placing the dryer sheet inside keeps them from building nests inside.
Wasps and yellowjackets are not fond of strong aromas, hence the reason the dryer sheets would discourage them from finding a home inside of your mailbox. They say this trick should work as long as the smell is lingering, this means you could help your mail carrier out by keeping a fresh dryer sheet in your mailbox during the peak times.
Dryer sheets haven't been proven to keep other bugs away but there is a chance that it will keep flies, mosquitos, and other insects away from your mailbox as well.
