Popular Retailer With 46 Michigan Stores Contemplates Closures
Once again, another business is on the chopping block as it has been an almost nonstop fallout from the effects of the shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many businesses were forced to shutter their doors after not receiving the same profits they had in the previous years as everyone was restricted to shopping online as they couldn't interact with one another. We have seen large department stores, mom-and-pop shops, and everything in between fall prey to the circumstances.
As things slowly return back to normal and we are readjusting our lives to how they previously were, companies have been publicly addressing their revenue losses year-over-year and being transparent about the financial status of their business. Many of them have filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy claims which would effectively shut down most of their business. Another large retail brand has customers of a chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, which could close locations across the country, including here in Michigan.
Big Lots is one of the many national discount retailers who find a way to bring necessary items to customers at affordable prices. After the pandemic, those prices may have risen a bit, but Big Lots is still struggling to generate enough revenue to remain afloat. In an SEC filing, Big Lots pointed out that the business had incurred net losses and used cash in all of 2022, 2023, and the first quarter of 2024.
As Big Lots may still be behind the 8 ball, store closures may begin to occur across the country, which means Michigan may be on jeopardy. Big Lots hasn't quite reached this level but if things don't get better soon one of our favorite discount retailers may be leaving the Mitten state. There are Big Lots locations all over the state of Michigan and any of them could be shut down if these trends continue.
