Van Buren County Michigan Man Buries $1 Million Winning Lottery Ticket in Jar

A man in Van Buren County became richer by an honest accident that he was lucky enough to experience. He went to the Speedway gas station located at 855 S. Kalamazoo St. in Paw Paw and asked for a lottery ticket. He didn't ask for the Major Cashword ticket he was handed but decided to keep it even though the cashier offered to exchange it for what he asked for.

The 45-year-old man says that he plays Cashword tickets from time to time, but this ticket was a fluke purchase. This fluke purchase would turn out to be a $1 million dollar winner after he scratched it off and scanned the code on his wife's Michigan Lottery App. He was stunned to see the $1 million prize pop up and thought it was a prank.

Once he realized that the ticket was real and he actually won $1 million, he put the ticket inside of a jar and buried it in his backyard. He says this decision came about because he was fearful that something would happen to the ticket inside of his home. He was one of 3 $1 million dollar winners for the Major Cashword game from the Michigan Lottery.

He would go on to claim his prize and elected for the one-time lump sum payment of about $634,000 instead of payments that would equal the full amount of his winnings. He says he plans to pay bills, pay off his house and save for retirement with the money he was able to win.
