Walgreens Closing More Michigan Stores By 2027
Earlier this year many people received devastating news that their local Walgreens store would be closing as they were trying to recover from last wages and mitigate the theft concerns they were receiving from multiple locations across the country. This isn't a problem specific to Walgreens, as we have seen plenty of other chain stores such as Walmart, Best Buy, Bed Bath and Beyond, and more, and all choose to shutter some or all of their locations for the same issues.
For the most part, the closing of these Walgreens locations only inconvenienced some people because they had to start using a Walgreens store that is further from their house, which may seem like a small problem but for people who walk or use public transportation, that's a huge issue. Now, Walgreens is going to make more changes across the country, including here in Michigan that could cause more problems for customers and pharmacy patients.
Walgreens announced that they will be closing up to 25% of their current stores across the United States and I'm sure some of them will be in Michigan. Walgreens executives said they will be looking to close stores that are one of the following things:
- To close in proximity to another store
- Not profitable
- Struggling with theft\
These are all concerns that they had with the first set of closures they made across America which is not what they were expecting. The data shows that most of their pharmacy users are choosing to fill their prescriptions using the online portal rather than picking them up in person. They have also seen a decline in purchases like candy, cards, snacks, and other items due to customers being more cost-sufficient.

Walgreens has not announced what locations would be closing but they plan to close a significant amount of stores that are underperforming. They have also mentioned some stores shifting to become more profitable rather than closing but there is some good and respectful things being done in these circumstances as well.
Walgreens has said that any employees who are affected by the closures will be offered a job at other locations to try and mitigate the amount of jobs that are lost due to this decision. Thousands of stores will close over the next couple of years and several locations in Michigan could be on that list. Be prepared for signage to go up and for sales to occur but we're praying that some of them stay!
