Sleeping is easily one of the most important things in our lives right alongside food, water, shelter, clothing, and love. Although this may be an essential need in our lives, sleeping comes much easier to some than it does others. I am one of those people who struggles with sleeping, and it definitely catches up to me from time to time. Nonetheless, everybody has the environments they enjoy sleeping in which may contribute to their lack of sleep.

Other times, your sleeping habits are affected by the things that are happening around you. If someone in your home is having trouble sleeping it may worry you or simply just rub off on you causing you to lose sleep as well. The weather, construction, and traffic habits that occur in your neighborhood can also factor into your sleep schedule. Heat is one of the biggest factors in how well or unwell someone sleeps, and that may be a huge problem for Michigan residents this week.

Too Hot In the Kitchen (Bedroom)?

Your body temperature or bedroom being too hot might be the reason why you are not sleeping well. Amerisleep has conducted studies that show that heat and humidity cause sweating, dehydration, increased heart rates, interrupted sleep schedules, may even cause delays in your body temperature dropping, or may worsen the symptoms of any sleep disorders.

With all of this in mind, the weather outside along with the temperature of your home and bedroom can contribute to an uncomfortable sleeping environment. This summer has already been a hot one and it doesn't look to be cooling down anytime soon which means sleeping comfortably may get more difficult. Amerisleep conducted a study to find out what night of sleep will be the worst for each state for this year.

The study is based upon looking at the evening temperatures and humidity rates for each state. Michigan's worst night of sleep will come on Wednesday, July 24th as both the temperature outside and humidity level will remain high through the night. This would be the night to crank up the air conditioning, close all the windows, and sleep in loose comfortable clothing.

Here are some other tips to help create a comfortable sleeping environment regularly:

  • Use fans, blackout curtains and light bedding to keep your room cool, cooling mattresses can help as well
  • Drink water throughout the day to prevent dehydration, it also doesn't hurt to have a glass or bottle of water by the bedside
  • Wear light and breathable fabrics
  • Take a cool shower or use damp towels on your neck and wrist to cool down before bed
  • Use a fan to circulate air and keep the room cool
  • Use A/C sparingly to keep the room cool but not too cold
  • Use DIY cooling techniques to keep yourself and your bedding cool

Good luck sleeping tonight because I will need a whole lot of it!
