Everyone wants to leave behind a legacy and for some of us, that legacy doesn't always play out the way we would like it to but for others can be honored to say they left behind an amazing story. We all leave behind something for everyone else to remember us by but it's up to us as individuals to decide if it'll be good or bad.

When you think of Michigan, there are tons of great legacies that come to mind like Jimmy Carter, Sojourner Truth, and Henry T Ford among many others. On the flip side there are some unfortunate legacies as well like Kwame Kilpatrick, Carl Eugene Watts, and many others. Kalamazoo is lucky enough to be home to a legend that left behind an unreal legacy.

Gene The Pumpkin Man had called Kalamazoo home for decades and there aren't too many people in the area that will say they don't know who he is. For years, Gene would provide thousands of people with orange gourds from his far every year, which would become a Halloween tradition for many families.

Estate Sale Of Kalamazoo Legend Creates Orange Overload

Gene was known for his love of pumpkins and the color orange and believe it or not, this wasn't the only color on his farm even though 90% of it was orange. Unfortunately, we lost Gene in December of 2024 at 88 years old but his love for the Southwest Michigan community lives on forever.

To continue that trend, former customers will have the chance to take home a memory of Gene the Pumpkin man to keep forever. Gene's family will be hosting multiple estate sales as they try and part ways with some things from the farm. The first of these sales will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, to Saturday, May 17.

All of the pumpkin and orange related items are now up for grabs including orange shirts, cowboy hats, and pumpkin pillows. There are also some farm items like bug spray, food cookers, farm tools (some that have been painted orange), and walking sticks. Below are some other very specific items that will be for sale:

  • 2010 Orange Cadillac 3.6 CTS Premium Car with about 119,500 miles
  • Pumpkin decor
  • EZ-GO golf cart
  • Hay and harvest wagons
  • Farm implements
  • Orange outhouse
  • “Super large” outdoor decor
  • Antique gas pump
  • Antique furniture

The family is asking that anyone who comes out the estate sale wears orange to celebrate and honor Gene while they enjoy the farm for one of the last times. The second sale will be in June and will have even more items available for purchase, but the future of the farm is uncertain at this moment.
