DTE has announced that Google's one-gigabyte "Project Cannoli" Data Center, which will be located off Haggerty Road near I-94 in Van Buren Township, is officially a "go."
State regulators have approved the deal between Google and DTE Energy Thursday, which will bring a roughly 1.5 million square-foot data center just outside Metro Detroit.

Data centers have been the center of controversy and a strong topic of discussion amongst our citizens since they started to pop up seemingly all over the state.
Now, Google plans on bringing a server warehouse near the Detroit Metro airport that apparently requires as much electricity as it would to power 750,000 homes, according to one report.
However, Commissioner Chair Dan Scripps recently said at a meeting in Lansing that Google will be footing the bill, and residents won’t have to worry about their energy bills going up because of it:

Google is one of the biggest, best-capitalized, and most profitable companies on the planet. Google can pay its own energy bills, and the contracts and conditions in the order before us ensure that it does just that.

Built into the deal with DTE is a plan that will provide 1600 MW of renewable energy for things like solar farms and nearly 480 MW of batteries that Google will pay for.

Are you concerned about this new data center, or are you keeping your head down and telling yourself everything will be OK? It just seems strange that these decisions just seem to be made all the time without public approval.
