I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but winter is going to be here before you know it. Now, if you would like me, this may excite you considering fall going into the winter is my favorite time of the year but for others the dreaded S word is something we don’t like to hear when it’s still warm outside.

But the truth of the matter is that we are officially one month away from our first snow, and that comes from the US National Weather Service in Gaylord Michigan. They’ve had some chilly weather overnight up there as well as us in Southwest Michigan, and they released a graphic showing when the average first snowfall is for certain cities in northern Michigan and we are officially at the one-month point.

Sault Ste. Marie‘s average first snowfall is October 21, Gaylord's is October 26, while Houghton Lake and Alpena both have an average first snowfall of November 3rd. Beyond that point, we have to expect snow because it’s pretty much winter and Christmas time around Thanksgiving, so be prepared as you head out and keep an eye on the radar because you never know what kind of weather we’re gonna get here.

Similar to how we got that massive 16-inch snowstorm in November 2022 here in Kalamazoo. I’m just saying, it could happen again. The first snow Kalamazoo experienced in the winter of 2022/2023 was on November 12th, even though the average first for the city is November 17th. So bundle up.
