Kalamazoo Middle & High Schools To Begin Daily Metal Detector Use
One of the things that the hardest for parents to do is send their children to school and out into the world as they have no control over how safe they are. We see tons of horrific things happening all over the world on a daily basis and anytime your kids are away a time that something could happen. Even schools have become less safe than they used to be.

There have been a number of school shootings happening all over the country including here in Michigan, which has parents, staff, and administration on edge. Keeping students safe at school is the number one priority but sometimes this can be difficult with so many different factors coming into play.
Daily Metal Detector Use Coming To Middle & High Schools In Kalamazoo
Kalamazoo Public Schools is looking to combat some of these factors with some changes happening in the fall of 2025. They have announced that they will be having their middle and high school students in Kalamazoo going through metal detectors every day when they arrive to school.
They cited the recent school shootings as one of the main reasons to bring forth the concerns and recommendations. Superintendent Dr. Darrin Slade says the goal of adding the metal detectors is for an additional layer of security. The district will be holding trainings for how to move through the detectors at a later date.
The school board passed the initiative with a unanimous vote and many of the parents who were at the board meeting raised their hand in approval of the decision. No students have been found with any weapons this year but in April of 2024, a A staff member found a Kalamazoo Central student in possession of a loaded firearm.
