One of the things that we are all trying to do is make it back home to our families safely every single day. Unfortunately, there are many different things that could happen in our world that would prevent this from occurring. For example, car accidents are the number one cause of death and then health concerns can land you in the hospital. Those are just a few factors, but there is a troublesome factor that many people are looking for answers to.

Whether you want to talk about war or the everyday world, violence is nothing new to any corner of the world. For centuries, many people have relied on violence to obtain their desires, get their point across, or to exact revenge. Either way, the point is, violence is very prevalent in our lives and could be the reason why you don't make it home safely and, on the news, instead.

Michigan can say that they are safer than many other states but there are some dangerous cities within the limits of the Mitten. Of course, everyone thinks of Detroit but there are levels of concern in Flint, Saginaw, Lansing, Battle Creek, Grand Rapids, Muskegon, Benton Harbor, and many other cities.

Violent Crime Rates Drop 13% According to Kalamazoo Department Of Public Safety

Kalamazoo has also expressed concern with the violent crime rates within their city and county limits and have been looking for solutions over the last couple of years. The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) believes they have found some helpful solutions as they released new data.

KDPS released data that says the violent crime rate in Kalamazoo had dropped by 13% from 2023 into 2024. After comparing the statistics from the two years, here are the decreases they found in violent crimes amongst the two years:

  • Homicide by nearly 55% (from 22 in 2023 to 10 in 2024)
  • Confirmed shots fired by about 49%
  • Assault with a firearm by nearly 16%
  • Aggravated assault by less than 1%
  • Property crime dropped by about 16% overall
  • Burglary down by nearly 21%
  • Larceny down by 17%
  • Motor vehicle theft down by 7%
  • Arson, however, increased by about 8%

KDPS has placed a major focus on reducing gun violence within Kalamazoo and they seized 460 guns which is just about the same amount they had seized the year before. Although they are making a change, KDPS says that it's an all-hands-on approach as they will need assistance from organizations and the community.
