The Violent Crime Rate In Michigan May Surprise You
Crime rates have been on the rise since the 1980s or 1990s and haven't slowed down in most states but this is for a multitude of reasons. Nonetheless, the surprising thing about these crime rates is that they are in very concentrated areas as the suburban neighborhoods continue to have lower crime rates. Either way, many residents think Michigan is a safer state than most and that may not be true.
Yes, we know that cities like Flint, Detroit, Saginaw, Benton Harbor, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and even Lansing will have higher crime rates due to their size. Even with these cities in mind, you would think that Michigan would have a lower crime rate than some other states because of things you see in the news or online. I hate to break your hearts or shatter your dreams, but Michigan is not as safe as we may believe it is.
Using the information presented to the FBI, Visual Capitalist put together a comprehensive map that shows the violent crime rates across the country. According to the FBI, violent crime is categorized as homicide, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault, and then used a scale of incidents per 100,000 residents to find the crime rate of each state using data up to October of 2023.

Michigan has 461 violent crimes reported per 100,000 residents as of October 2023 which puts them above the nation average by 80 crimes. Michigan has the second highest violent crime rate among Midwest states as Missouri is the only state that is higher than Michigan with 488. Michigan also has a significantly higher violent crime rate than Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and even Wisconsin as Indiana has the most out of those states with 309.
According to this map, Michigan has the 12th highest violent crime rate in the entire country behind states and territories like Alaska, D.C, California, Louisiana, Colorado, and others. Granted, this list is skewed in many ways including reporting being one of the main factors, so this list should be taken with a grain of salt but it does make you think about how safe Michigan is or isn't.
