Meijer Grocery Stores Are Popping Up Across Michigan With A Smaller Footprint
Meijer is currently working on opening multiple stores in Michigan that could be considered “Mini-Meijer” stores, occupying only half of the footprint as normal-sized grocery stores.
Meijer, on average, has supercenters that are traditionally around 75,000 square feet, but a new model that they’ve been rolling out over the past three years is becoming more popular, which essentially features a grocery store with just groceries and no section for clothes, automotive, or household items outside of the normal needs.
They are considered “Market Fresh “ Meijer stores, and last year one of these opened up in Clarkston and Rochester Hills recently as well.
Currently, they are building one in Taylor, Farmington Hills and Livonia, the latter of which is scheduled to open this week. Crain’s business highlighted these stores recently, which highlights the concept that a one-stop shop for groceries is becoming a popular trend:
When Meijer opens a 75,000-square-foot grocery store in Livonia on Aug. 19, it will mark the latest step in the retailer’s expansion of a smaller-format concept it began testing three years ago. The Livonia store follows a 47,000-square-foot Meijer Grocery that opened in Rochester Hills in May.
This new "Mini Meijer" wouldn't be the first of its kind, as Crain's mentioned in their article; this is a concept that has been growing in the last 3 years:
Meijer debuted the concept in 2023 with stores in Macomb Township and Lake Orion and has another grocery-format store planned for Clinton Township. The new Meijer Grocery at 33500 Seven Mile Road is designed to offer fresh foods, pharmacy services and everyday essentials in about half the footprint of a traditional Meijer supercenter.
