Michigan Churches at Risk of Serving Recalled Crackers
Communion is one of the most important of not only the Christian church but the way they live. They are taught to drink the wine (grape juice) and eat the bread (cracker) to represent the body and blood of Jesus Christ which was broken for them and shed. They are also supposed to spread this principal throughout their life and break bread and share drinks with the people of the world.

This is something that is only done by religions that follow Jesus, but the ingredients used for the tradition are as common and household as they get. As mentioned before, the wine is simply just Welch's grape juice while the bread is some form of cracker. There are some churches that use white communion bread, some use saltine like crackers, and others may use oyster crackers.
It doesn't matter what kind of cracker is used as long as you are doing so in remembrance of Jesus, unless there's another reason you shouldn't be using those crackers. That's exactly in the case in Michigan as some churches may be unknowingly serving their congregation recalled crackers.
An Ohio based company; Shearer’s Foods issued a voluntary recall of 15,000 cases of oyster crackers. The recalled crackers were sold at Target, Walmart and Giant Eagle under store names all across the United States. The crackers were recalled because they may be contaminated with stainless steel wire.
This would prompt the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to issue a Class II level classification, which means exposure may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences. Shearer’s Foods says individuals who are known to have purchased the items are being contacted.
I also want to acknowledge that oyster crackers are not only used for communion and many people use them on a regular basis. In fact, oyster crackers are eaten with soups like Chicken Noodle and Chili all the time. There's a chance that you may have these recalled crackers in your pantry.
You can find the full recall details here. As always if you or your church have purchased a recalled item, then you can return them to the place of purchase for a full refund or choose to discard of them.
