Governor Gretchen Whitmer has been the governor of Michigan since 2019, and many Michiganders are in support of her and the things that her staff have accomplished in their short time in office. She has been one of the most widely accepted governors of Michigan as she in often seen interacting with the residents at her events and other instances.

Although Governor Whitmer has been amazing to most people, there are some people that don't completely agree with her appointment. This is nothing new as there are always losers in every election but this time, there is someone who is looking to dethrone her that many people may not have expected.

The mayor of Detroit, Mike Duggan has decided he is going to be leaving his current digs to try his hand at catching a bigger fish. Mayor Duggan has done an amazing job at working to restoring Detroit to the bustling city that is used to be and now is looking to take on a larger project.

Duggan has announced that he will be running for a chance to be sitting in the Governor's Office in 2026. He will be dropping his affiliation and tag with the Democratic party and will be choosing to run as an independent. He is hoping to be Whitmer's successor as she is limited to so many terms under the Michigan law.

Duggan believes that he will be able to govern more effectively as an independent rather than dealing with the crowded competition in the Democratic Party. Below are some of the other candidates who may run to be the Governor of Michigan:

Democrats

  • Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson
  • Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist III
  • Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson
  • U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg

Republicans

  • Michigan Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt
  • former state Attorney General Mike Cox
  • former state Rep. Tom Leonard
  • U.S. Rep. John James.
  • Tudor Dixon Republican gubernatorial nominee in 2022

Many people believe that Duggan has a true shot to win the Governor's seat after the work he has down with Michigan largest city but also with this decision to run as an independent due to the current political climate of our state and country.
