As someone who has no food allergies, I couldn't imagine the stress of having to manage your allergens while trying to eat. Also, I have tons of sympathy for parents, guardians, and other childcare providers who have to navigate this for those children. It's a scary situation when someone eats something that contains something they are allergic to.

This is one of the many reasons that ingredients have to be listed on products, especially food products which could have been made with the same materials that the allergens came in contact with. For the most part those people and their families find a system that keeps themselves safe, but sometimes some products slip through the cracks.

That's exactly what happened with this snack that was sold in stores all across Michigan. Meijer and Kroger are two grocery stores who have a heavy presence in the Midwest but more importantly in the Mitten state. Recently, the FDA asked them to remove some products from their shelves immediately due to allergen concerns.

Both Meijer and Kroger are to remove Berry Buddies, Berries & Pancakes breakfast snack packs from the shelves because they contain wheat and eggs but that is not detailed on the packaging. This obviously causes concerns for those who may be lactose intolerant, allergic to eggs, or even gluten free.

The snack packs are normally found in the refrigerated section of the grocery store and there are currently 694 cases on recall. So far, there have been no illnesses or other incidents reported but the recall was issued after a production label changeover failure caused an incorrect back label to be placed on the product.

The Berry Buddies Berries & Pancakes come in a 2.1-ounce/60-gram, colored plastic package marked with lot No. 1097901 on the top with an expiration date of 2/25/2025. In addition to Michigan, the following states have been affected as well:

  • Arkansas
  • Ohio
  • Tennessee
  • Virginia
  • Minnesota
  • Kentucky
  • Indiana
  • Illinois
  • Missouri
  • Mississippi
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin

As always, if you are in possession of recalled product, you have some options. If you don't have any allergen concerns with wheat or eggs than you can keep and consume them. If you're in danger to these allergens than you can either dispose of them or take them back to the store for a full refund. Lastly, even if you have no worries with the allergens, you can still return the product for full refund or dispose of it.
