Over the past few months, there have been a large group of women and young women who are getting together at The Centre Point Community Center out on 10th street for open gym basketball. They have been getting a pretty decent turnout, able to run multiple courts of pickup 5-on-5 basketball.

After numbers have been consistently rising, they are now taking the next steps and progressing their hobby to the next step. They are starting a women's basketball league here that will have teams, referees, scorekeepers, tournament play, and more.

Sierra James, a Kalamazoo native who played basketball at both Loy Norrix and Kalamazoo Valley Community College has been the organizer of everything so far, spreading the word on social media to get the female hoopers back in the gym. After doing the footwork and seeing progress, she is ready to make the next move toward league play.

The above post was made this week on Facebook, encouraging everyone to support being involved in some way. The games are free to attend as a spectator and they are still looking for volunteers and other women who play basketball that would like to be involved.

The games will be on Mondays at 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. every week starting the week of April 24 and going through the week of June 5. They are still looking for volunteers to run scoreboards, be scorebook keepers, referees, and other means to help the games run smoothly.
