Scams have become the bane of our existence as there always seems to be a new scam to be aware of. Some scammers do their best to find the most vulnerable people to take advantage of for personal gain while other scammers choose to target the gullible individuals who may not know better. Either way, scamming is a disgraceful way to make a living.

While we may never be able to escape scams, we can find ways to protect ourselves and be aware of their tactics. The hardest part about this is that there are always new scams popping up or even old scams resurfacing, making it harder to decipher which are scams and which are not.

For the most part, scams are conducted through texts, emails, or phone calls where the scammer will be asking for sensitive information and direct action. These are two telltale warning signs that someone is trying to scam you. Unfortunately for those of us in Michigan there's a scam that has returned.

Michigan Residents Targeted In New Toll Payment Scam

Michigan residents may have already received or should be aware that they may receive a text that requires them to pay toll fees before legal action is taken. Firstly, the text mentions the DMV in Michigan, which we call the SOS and secondly, there is a link they are asking you to visit. These are two red flags as they are requesting action, and it has misinformation.

The text is telling Michigan residents that they have outstanding toll payments to make and that the text was their final notice before a certain time you will be penalized or subject to legal action. This is a scam because Michigan is not a toll road state so no Michigan drivers should be receiving text from the Department of Transportation asking for toll payments.

Michigan State Police are telling residents to refrain from visiting or clicking on any links they may receive. They should also report the text for spam and delete it from your phone. They also say that the SOS would never text you asking for money and that our state doesn't have a DMV.
